The recent news about a series of contacts in Doha, Qatar between Taliban representatives and the official Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai were tentatively welcomed by the American press. These negotiations, which would have been called "treason" or "surrender" at the beginning of the American-led operation in Afghanistan started in 2001 are now widely seen as an important contribution to achieving President Obama's goal of withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan by the year 2014.Unfortunately, the experience of the Soviet operation in Afghanistan in 1979-1989, whose delusions and pitfalls the American-led coalition repeated almost one for one, does not give much ground for optimism. In Afghanistan, direct contacts between the official government and the Islamist opposition, even with a benevolent neutrality of the occupying power, do not yet guarantee neither a safe withdrawal of foreign troops nor reconciliation inside the country after the foreigners leave.
