The burning of several copies of the Quran taken from prisoners at Bagram military base ignited a massive protest of Afghan civilians, who literally besieged the base. The scandal couldn’t have come at a less appropriate moment, considering the upcoming final NATO troops withdrawal, talks between Taliban, the Afghanistan government and the US and alarming reports about enormous popularity of radical religious ideals among Afghan citizens. According to the Guardian, almost 3000 protesters gathered outside Bagram military base to express their anger with regards to the burning of the religious book. Some were armed with archaic hunting rifles and even slingshots and police forces had to use “some non-lethal munitions were to help disperse the crowd."
